Home visits are not a luxury or a convenience — they're a clinical decision. There are some patients who simply cannot make it to a clinic at 11 pm, and for those patients, having a doctor come to them is genuinely better care. Here's how the service works.
Who home visits are best for
- Elderly patients with limited mobility, especially those living alone
- Aged-care facility residents when the on-site GP is unavailable
- Patients recovering from recent surgery who can't get themselves to a clinic
- Patients with palliative-care needs who want to remain at home
- Patients with serious mobility issues — wheelchair-dependent, severe arthritis, recent fracture
- Families with multiple unwell children when bringing them all to a clinic is impractical
If you can drive yourself or be driven to the clinic, walking in is usually faster and cheaper. A home visit costs $100 more than a walk-in and takes longer end to end.
What we can do at your home
- Full history and examination
- Vitals (blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, blood sugar)
- Urine dipstick
- ECG (for chest pain or palpitations review)
- Wound dressing changes
- Suture removal
- Simple procedural work where appropriate
- Writing scripts and referrals on-site
What we cannot do at your home
- Suturing of large or complex wounds (needs clinic lighting and a sterile field)
- Imaging — no X-rays at home
- IV fluids or IV medications
- Anything requiring resuscitation equipment
If you'd be better cared for in the clinic or in ED, we'll tell you on the phone before we dispatch a doctor. We don't drive out only to send you to hospital — that wastes everyone's time.
The 15-minute service area
Home visits are offered to addresses within roughly a 15-minute drive of 19–21 Manningham Road Bulleen at after-hours speeds. That covers Bulleen, Templestowe, Doncaster, Doncaster East, Lower Plenty, Heidelberg, Ivanhoe, Eaglemont, Rosanna, Viewbank, Kew, Kew East, Balwyn, North Balwyn, Donvale, Park Orchards and adjacent suburbs. Greensborough, Eltham, Warrandyte and Box Hill are on the edge of our radius — phone us first.
How the booking process works
Home visits are phone-first. Call 0403 025 359 and one of our clinicians will:
- Take a brief history and triage your problem
- Confirm a home visit is the right level of care (versus walk-in or ED)
- Quote the $350 + GST fee and confirm payment method
- Confirm your address and provide an ETA (usually 60–120 minutes)
- Dispatch the on-call doctor
Aged-care and palliative-care visits
We have a working relationship with several aged-care facilities in Doncaster, Templestowe and Ivanhoe. Facilities can call us directly; we will liaise with the patient's family and treating GP, and we always send a letter back to the facility for the morning shift. For palliative-care patients, we can manage symptom control after hours but we won't replace the patient's regular palliative team — we work alongside them.
Fees and how payment works
$350 + GST = $385 total, paid on the night by EFTPOS, debit, credit or contactless. We carry a portable card reader. We don't issue invoices in arrears. Scripts, dressings and consumables (if used) are charged in addition and quoted at the visit.
Tonight, if you're unsure
Phone us. We'll tell you in two minutes whether a home visit, a walk-in, or ED is right for you. The phone call is free and we will never sell you a home visit you don't need.
